Desire of the Aspirant is a classical text written by al-S̲h̲ahīd al-T̲h̲ānī, that delves into the etiquettes and conduct expected of seminary students. It offers a comprehensive exploration of the perspectives and manners that students of knowledge are encouraged to adopt, rooted in the teachings of the Quran, the Hadith corpus, and intellectual wisdom. This classical text has a rich tradition of being imparted to aspiring scholars within the Islamic Seminary, serving as a guide for those who aspire to walk the path of scholarship.
In this second part of the course, we continue to delve into the foundational principles and etiquettes that are essential for those embarking on the path of scholarship within the Islamic Seminary.

Course Syllabus:

1.    Concerning the Manners of the Teacher and Student:

o    An in-depth examination of the relationships and behaviors expected between teachers and students in the pursuit of knowledge.

2.    Concerning the Manners of Fatwa: The Mufti and the Mustafti:

o    A comprehensive discussion on the proper conduct and etiquette related to issuing religious rulings (fatwas) and seeking them, highlighting the roles of the Mufti (one who gives the fatwa) and the Mustafti (one who seeks the fatwa).

3.    Concerning Debate, its Manners, Conditions, and Harms:

o    A detailed exploration of the art of debate, encompassing the etiquettes to be observed, the necessary conditions for constructive debates, and an understanding of potential harms that can arise in the process.

4.    Concerning the Manners of Writing and Books:

o    A study of the proper manners and protocols involved in scholarly writing, as well as the handling and dissemination of knowledge through books, emphasizing the importance of maintaining academic integrity and respect for written works.

This couse is instructed by Shaykh Ahmad Cherri. It meets on Saturdays at 8 pm EST, and it is available to view any time thereafter.
