This course presents an overview of the history of Hadith, Hadith terminology, and the categories of Hadith.
This course walks students through the Science of Hadith. Understanding the Science of Hadith is crucial to understanding the foundations of Islamic theology, Shariah, and Islamic thought. The primary text will be Introduction to Hadith by al-Shahid al-Thani and Abdul Hadi al-Fadhli, which outlines the history, development, and current practice of Hadith with special attention to Shiʿa scholarship. It covers hadith terminology, sources of hadith, chains of narration, categories of hadith, the criteria for accepting hadith narrators, transmission of hadith, and motives behind the fabrication of Hadith. A total of 22 lessons were presented in the year 2017-2018. This course is instructed by Sayed Mohammad Baqer al-Qazwini.

Sayed Mohammad Baqer studied ten years at the Seminary of Qom, and he completed a BA in Sociology from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. He is currently based at the Islamic Institute of America, based in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.
